House Beautiful had a fun article this month called “101 Designer Secrets” from top name designers – some were contradicting (since rules are meant to be broken!), but many of the tips were great things to keep in mind while decorating. Since trying to put to practice over 100 different things is near impossible, we picked out some of our favorites. Grab the issue for the full list and let us know if we can help you put some of these to practice in your own home!

Instead of a towel bar, mount 5 robe hooks 68″ high for towels and robes.” -Robert Stilin

A more casual look – and much more functional. Caution: you may miss picking up wet towels off the bathroom floor!

Best dog-proof covering: Cowhide. Cannot beat it, cannot hurt it.” – Jill Sharp Brinson

And it’s a great way to take your traditional home in a more bohemian direction.

“When doing curtains or shades, take them all the way up to the ceiling – it will increase the height of the room.” – Vicente Wolf

AND

“Hang curtains. They make a room seem finished. Think of them as the lipstick of decorating.” – Peter Dunham

“A simple sisal rug in natural or gray is the best way to make a room look clean and elegant.” – James Huniford

These sisal rugs bring texture into the rooms without making things too busy. Also a great option for pets!

  1. I love sisal and jute rugs! And I agree about the curtains. Once we stuck them up, our home looked more complete, airy and elegant. It’s too bad we don’t have more windows 😉
