Coastal bookshelf featuring blue and green huesTake advantage of your bookshelf! Use it as a creative way to not only display coastal accessories, but books as well. It’s nothing new that books can be used as decor. A well placed coffee table book can lend a great decorative hand to a coastal living room. That doesn’t mean a well thought out and designed bookshelf can’t do the same. The days of boring books on your bookshelf are over! There’s no reason you shouldn’t take advantage of that prime design space. Bring style with the books by placing them vertical or laying them horizontal to mix up the look on the shelf. Lean books to give your bookshelf a break from the routine too. You can even plan out your bookshelf and take it a step further by creating a color scheme throughout the shelf (pictured below).

Have fun and be creative with the space you have in your coastal home. If you look at your bookshelf and inspiration isn’t sparking creative ideas then look at these photos. Coastal home using a oat propeller as a design accessoryWhen it comes to nautical home decor, one of the best places take inspiration from are boats. These are equipped with amazing pieces that happen to fit perfectly into any coastal home. We’re talking everything from ropes to buoys and more.

If you’re looking to a ship for design pieces, you can almost take the whole thing and use any part of it. Think about what you could do with a little reclaimed boat wood? How about those cleats and ropes? Heck, even the life saver can be used as an art piece! We’ve definitely seen a couple of those hanging on walls. The limit to what you can use in your home as an accessories is only your imagination.

Seriously, next you see a bot just imagine what piece you can use in your home, inside or outside, and how much nautical style it can bring. Coastal living room with buoys for decor Hanging oars as wall art in a nautical style home Side console using rope and cleats Wooden buoys as decor pieces

Tuesday Tips

A tropical inspired living room with fun wall artYou can never have enough art in your home. Art can be as abstract and crazy as you want or it can flat out say exactly what you want it to. Why beat around the bush?

Use art to say what’s on your mind! We tend to see signs and art in coastal homes that say something about the beach or the beautiful beach city they are located in (Shout out to Laguna Beach!) and we love that. We love it because that’s something you don’t see in other home decor styles. You might find a Victorian style home with a sign that says, “God Save The Queen,” but that’s probably it. Chances are you won’t find a sign that says, “Hello Gorgeous.”

Have fun with the art and signs you place around your home. Take a look at how these spaces are saying something with the art. If you want to bring more art into your home, check out what we call ‘the written word’ section on the Tuvalu Home online store here!

We can’t just hang any old art though, no-no. No one wants to be that person that just puts something in their home because they saw it once in a magazine. We must take steps to be better than that. Really put some thought into it because it’s something you are going to be looking at it everyday and every guest that enters your home with see.

This is why we must choose something fun! We must choose something meaningful! Maybe add some colorful? Maybe something silly? At least make it something cherished and loved!

You find your likes, dislikes and what really calls to you. Art is truly a great way to express yourself and to further imprint onto your home.

Coastal cottage with stripes and geometric patternsPatterns are a staple in coastal home decor. With many of the common patterns used in coastal homes, a new one has been showing up. The geometric pattern has been spotted offering a fun and unique way to add some character and style to a space.

Geometric patterns effortlessly make their way into coastal homes because of their playful style. They’re also a quick step away from the classic stripe patterns that often show up in nautical home and beach cottages. The two patterns can be used to play off of each other, but the geometric pattern can quickly steal the show.

With the eye catching style of geometric patterns, a little accent piece is all you need. It’s easy to add a fun pillow, throw or rug to add a pop of style to the space. With the sharp lines and repeating patterns our eyes are naturally drawn to the patterns. This creates a fun accent piece that can help carry the eyes through the room.

Get inspired by this fun and energetic pattern! The geometric lines and shapes will be a fun addition to the home and add a great focal point!
