Tuesday’s Tips

Designing for kids is always a blast! You get to decorate with all the fun and playful options that you normally don’t get to. Dust off that crazy imagination and get ready to collaborate with the most fun clients around – kids. The excitement that comes from them participating in the design of their new space is what it’s all about. Let’s take a look a few rooms to get you in the right design space and bring out your inner child!

Colors, color, colors! You have an endless color options and palettes to work with when it comes to kids’ bedrooms. No color is off limits. Not all designers want to stray too far from the overall style and feel of the home’s decor which means they won’t go too crazy with the colors. And others will let the kids pick out their favorite colors and go wild! It’s a great way to get the kids involved and creates a fun environment for them to be themselves. You don’t want them waking up in a dark, gloomy space do you? No way! So bring out the colors!

Looking to bring a little color to the kid’s bedroom, but not wanting to go all out? Then colored accents are your new best friends! Use accent colors to bring small pops of bright colors into the space without going overboard with colors. Stay true to the home’s overall theme and still have a little fun in the kid’s room. Accenting the right pieces can be tricky, you want the accented pieces to be noticed, however, you don’t want eyes to linger on them. Start with a few accented pieces and then add or subtract from there.

You can bring fun design pieces into the kid’s bedroom that both of you will like! Do you have an extra model sail boat, vintage chest or rustic dresser that needs a home? Well, there’s no reason to count out the kids’ bedrooms. They will get a kick out of having something like a model sail boat in their room and you can finally display it instead of hiding it in the garage or attic.

Speaking of model sail boats, they are the perfect addition and decor pieces for the kids’ bedrooms. Designers beware, you may want to avoid investing in antique or vintage model because they are more than likely going to be looked at as toys and not models. We all know where that leads – broken or ‘lost’.

Not into bright colors? Here’s kids’ bedroom designed with soft, neutral colors. It’s simple, calm and inviting. There’s nothing over the top about this space and there doesn’t need to be; sometimes less is more. We love a space that looks like it was put together effortlessly and this has just that look.

Open kitchen storageWe’ve been seeing a lot open shelf/open storage kitchens lately and we love it! It’s another fun way like coastal kitchen hardware to bring style and character to your kitchen. It’s a pretty simple idea; stop hiding everything and show off what you’ve got!

Let people see all your plates, cups, spices, utensils, cooking supplies, pots, pans and small appliances. We love it because it opens the kitchen right up. It gets rid of the closed off look and invites everyone right in. When people display their spices and baking essentials in mason jars or other glass jars it gives the kitchen a cute, homey look. Plus when they’re out, they’re begging to be used and make you want to cook and bake!

With everything out for your family and guests to see there will be no more wondering where the mugs or a spatchula are. Also when you have no where to hide your dishes it will finally give you a good reason to go get that cute set you’ve been eyeing for awhile now! Stop hiding and open up your kitchen! :: How To Create A Coastal Gallery Wall ::

Tuesday Tips

Coastal galler wall with sea animal inspired artA gallery wall is a great way to display art and take full advantage of the walls in your home. There’s no need for your walls to stay bare and look plain. Creating a gallery wall is an easy way to solve that problem. If you follow these 3 steps to create your gallery wall, you’ll have your walls covered and looking good in no time!

1. Pick Out Your Art
First, and foremost, you need to pick out the art you wish to display. Pick out fun and creative pieces that make up a unique gallery wall. You can decide if your gallery wall is made up completely of art prints or if you want to incorporate other pieces of art or objects. Display pieces that reflect your style and create a gallery wall that is special to you.

2. Lay It Out
Before you start mounting your art, lay it out on the ground. Get an idea of what works and looks good before you start putting holes in your wall. Seriously, lay it out on the ground. The last thing you want to do is decide halfway through installing the art that you’ve changed your mind or you find out that certain pieces don’t fit well together. Don’t find yourself stuck covering up holes! The best part about a gallery wall layout is there’s no ‘right way’ to do it. The way it looks is entirely up to you! Get creative with the wall space and your art!

3. Put It Up
The last step after you finalize your layout on the ground (yes, we are going to stress that again) is to mount each piece of your gallery wall. This is the step that is going to take the longest and some patience. Get yourself a stud finder, a leveler, some nails and a hammer. You may also want to look into drywall screws and drywall anchors too. Gallery walls don’t always line up perfectly with studs and you should always mount things properly. Once you have the right tools and hardware, pick a piece and start mounting your gallery wall! Then step back and enjoy your new gallery wall.

Tuesday Tips

A tropical inspired living room with fun wall artYou can never have enough art in your home. It can get as abstract as you want or it can flat out say exactly what you want it to. Why beat around the bush? Let everyone know exactly what’s on your mind! If you’ve decorated a coastal style home, your art will most likely say something about the beach or the beautiful beach city you take pride living in. And we’re all about that! Maybe you want a friendly reminder when you wake up that says, “Hello Gorgeous.” That’s not a bad way to start your day, is it? Have fun with the art and signs you place around your home. Take a look at how these spaces are saying something with the art. If you want to bring more art into your home, check out what we call ‘the written word’ section on the Tuvalu Home online store here!

Beauitful tile work in a cuban homeNow that traveling to Cuba has become easier for Americans, it seems that everyone is trying to make their way over there and see what they’ve been missing out on. Even though it’s not exactly legal to just jump a flight and vacation over there, the lengthy process that once was has been set aside making traveling over much less of a hassle. Heading over there under the guise of journalism is one way to ensure a trip to Cuba. That’s why you may have seen many publications toting their Cuban trips, photos and stories. We have no objections to people sharing the Cuban culture because it is as island lifestyle as it gets. We love seeing the architecture, the design and the home decor that we now get an up close look at.

One design aspect we’re really excited about is the beautiful tile work that they do in Cuba. The bright, colorful patterns are gorgeous and something to dream about. As trendy as trips to Cuba are, the culture and lifestyle that they finally get to share with us is much more fascinating. We’ve gathered some great Cuban tile photos and we hope there are many more to come from travels over to their country. Take a look at how they have create wonderful works of art and get inspired to bring a little Cuban style to your home.

:: Go Big With Your Art! ::

Tuesday Tips

Creative way to show off art. Create a shelf and place the frame on it.We think that no wall should be left behind! No wall shall go bare while there is art out in the world to hang on it! That’s why you should go big with your art. Cover as much of that wall as you can. There are many ways to do this: get one large piece to cover the wall, create a gallery wall, or get creative with how you display it (like the picture shown above). The bottom line is you get to cover your walls and you get to show off some great art. It’s truly a win-win, especially for those home owners that are fortunate enough to have large spaces. Use large art or gallery walls to fill the space. Using art to cover the walls can give the room a fuller, richer feel when you enter it. Take a look at what these designers have done with these spaces and how they’ve used art to not only cover the walls, but pull the room together.
