Tuesday Tips

We came across a great article from Coastal Living’s idea house called  7 Ways with Coastal Color and had to share it with you!  It’s a quick and easy read with pictures;  I’ll sum it up for you right here:

1. Set the tone of your home from the beginning at the entry.
2. Authentic touches, distressed or vintage pieces, can give the home a ‘lived in’ feel.
3. Use beach inspired colors and light to give an indoor room an outdoor, al fresco feeling.
4. Don’t match everything, instead create an eclectic palette throughout the home.
5. Every color doesn’t need to be bold–subtle color goes a long way.
6. Make odd-shaped rooms appear bigger by painting all the walls  the same color.
7. Blue painted walls can bring the coastal feel into the home.

We love and agree with all of these tips, and will share more about coastal color with you soon!

Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros

bamboo-bed-frame-coastal-bedroom-tuvaluThe bed is the most important part of your bedroom. Simply because it’s the main focus of the space and more importantly that’s where you fall asleep every night. When you’re looking for a bed, you are searching the perfect match. From the bed frame to the actual mattress it all weighs in on your decision. First things first, you need to decided what size you want your bed to be or what size it can be. At the moment you may be in your cute apartment and a cal king just won’t quite fit in the room. So you need to adjust and pick what fits in the room. Maybe your home’s master bedroom is twice the size of the rest of the home and with all that amazing space you can fit that cal king. In this case ladies, size does matter. We need a bed that’s going to fit the space perfectly. Don’t worry if your home at the moment is a temporary stop. You will get your space one day and that queen bed with fit in your new bedroom perfectly!
woven-bed-frame-coastal-bedroom-home-decor-tuvalucoastal-bedroom-home-decor-fish-tuvaluAfter you’ve decided the size of your bed you need to figure out what’s going to hold it up. Bed frame? Ropes from the ceiling? Or is it just going to lay on the floor? Many design choices and styles will be made and factored in at this stage. Do you want your decor to compliment your bed frame or do you want your bed to stand out on its own? Do you want a large bamboo bed frame? Do you want a simple, metal bed frame? Do you even want a bed frame? With so many choices out there you can literally dream up anything. We like to make the space as cohesive as possible and make sure the room flows. If we’re going with a rustic bed frame and using some old barn doors as headboards then we’re going to work the rest of the space around that. We’ll bring in some coastal, rustic pieces to bring the room together. If we have high ceilings to work with ,we’re going to want to play with some of the vertical space that’s been given to us and choose a beautiful canopy bed frame while shooting for the tropical, vacation look. The design choices are endless and up to your space, personality and style.
Rustic style bedroomcanpoy-tropical-coastal-bedroom-home-decor-tuvaluYou’ve got your bed picked out and you’ve finally decided on your bed frame and headboard. Now what? Bedding! One more way you get to bring some fun design elements to your coastal bedroom. Colors, prints, patterns, pillows, sheets, throws, and whatever else you want to put on top of your bed! The best part about your bedding is you can use it to further the space’s cohesiveness with textures, patterns and colors. You can bring it all together and make the bedroom feel complete. Go bold with patterns and textures to give the room fun and playful vibes and draw even more attention to your bed because it is the main focus of the space. Not into bold? Go with muted colors and light fabrics to have a more relaxed and easy going feel to the space. Are you a pillow queen? Because we support that your majesty! If you love your pillows it just adds another design element you get to design your heart with. Hate ripping pillows on and putting them back every day? Then keep it simple with a just a few. Your bedding choices can really influence the space, so make sure you don’t take it lightly!

Tuesday’s Tips From The Pros

Wood headboard in a eclectic bedroom Headboards are one of our favorite things in the bedroom. They can be big or small or technically not their at all. It’s all up to you and your style! With so many options out there you are literally free to do whatever you want. You can go with a traditional headboard that’s usually small to medium basic piece that is connected to the bed frame. This guy will help keep the pillows on your bed and the linens in place. Or you can get a multipurpose headboard that has selves and drawers built in.

There’s really no reason you won’t be able to find the headboard you want. You can get a wood headboard, an upholstered headboard, or a possible a steel/iron cast headboard. If you dream it up, it can be made. Plus plenty of things can be made into a makeshift headboard, like barn doors, old wood shutters and even mirrors. The beauty of the headboard is that it doesn’t have to be strictly functional. It can be for design purposes only.

They can be large and dominate the space so that your eyes are immediately drawn to it or they can be small and barely noticeable. It’s a design element that can bring life back into a dull room or it can be just another piece of furniture. It’s really all up your imagination and what you want the piece to bring to your bedroom. There are no limitations to the headboard or real guidelines as to how it’s suppose to be. There’s really only one rule that makes sense; it should be at the head of your bed. Then again, who are we to tell you how to design your bedroom?

Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros

Nautical inspired bedroom decor One element of the bedroom that we feel that gets overlooked quite often is the nightstand. Everyone focuses on the bed, bed frame and headboards and forgets about it. I don’t know about you, but my nightstand is a lifesaver and has helped out in numerous ways. We want to cover everything in the bedroom so there’s no way we were gonna leave this little guy out. We’re gonna show you a few different design elements and decor pieces that will make your nightstand complete.
Bedroom night standstacked vintage trunks as nightstands in the bedroom side table in a rustic style homeBamboo inspired nightstand in a coastal bedroomNightstands come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles. There’s no limit to what you can put next to your bed and use as your nightstand. You can go with a basic nightstand table like the Mendocino Table or you can go with a more traditional nightstand that has a drawer like the Mandalay Nightstand. Want to get a little more creative? No problem! You can try stacking vintage trunks or use an accent side table with a round top like the Somerville Side Table shown above. It’s all up to you and your style. You can really bring the space together when you find a nightstand that’s the right fit for your bedroom. Looks aren’t always everything though and functionality plays a part too. Don’t get us wrong, you’re nightstand needs to be cute and show that you have good style and taste, but if you’re going to need to a little more space or storage out of your nightstand then sometimes a simple side table won’t cut it. Think about the use and abuse your nightstand will endure while trying to find the right one. It’s out there! You’ve just gotta look!
nightstand lamps and table lampsA nightstand is incomplete without a lamp on it or extremely close to it, like a floor lamp hanging over it acing like a table lamp. They not only serve aesthetic purposes, but they bring more light into the space. What good is all that hard work put into decorating if it can’t even be seen? Exactly. Most importantly the nightstand lamp gives you light right where you want it. It allows you to get cozy and read your favorite book or browse through the latest issue or Coastal Living or Elle Decor. If you’re more of an in bed reader look at lamps that will enable you to do so and make it easier to give you accessible light at night like our Paris Desk Lamp. If you already have your nook setup in the corner of your room and enjoy reading there then the Jamie Young French Bottle Lamp will give you that perfect touch of light in your bedroom and look great on your nightstand.

Vintage style alarm clock for the bedroom nightstand

Call it old fashion, but I like to have an alarm clock on my nightstand. Yes, my phone is right there and has the same functions, if not more, but something about alarm clocks make me feel at home and nostalgic. Cell phones with built in alarms weren’t always around and I’ve had them fail on me a number of times. Alarm clocks also bring in a fun design element too. You can find cute ones that have a great vintage style like the Ritz Alarm Clock or if you’re into digital ones you can go that route too. Either way we like alarm clocks on our nightstand.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t mind waking up to familiar faces smiling back at me in the morning. That’s why we love putting picture frames with loved ones on our nightstand. They also add a personal touch so your bedroom doesn’t feel like it’s in a stuffy magazine or like it’s a hotel room. The Boatwood Frame will add a touch of coastal decor without taking away from any picture you want to frame in it. It’s not the only frame we have though, you can check them all out Here.

There are so many fun accessories and things you can add to your nightstand. You can go as crazy as you want and try to fit as much as possible on your nightstand. Or you can keep it clean and simple and only keep the necessities on your nightstand. It’s all up to you. Add some shells, store your books or have fresh flowers that will make your space smell wonderful. Nightstands are not only there to look good, but they’re there to help. So take advantage of them!
