Coastal living room with simple design There’s something refreshing about simple, elegant coastal design. It creates an open feeling in the space that is inviting and mind settling. It takes you to a place that doesn’t need to be filled with extra furniture or clutter and useless junk. Sometimes people can get a little too carried away with their accessories and next thing you know they’re a hoarder, just kidding, but they do have too much going on.

There is an art to keeping it simple. You want to add enough elements to tell your story and show your design style in the space, but also keep it to a minimum. You can do this by finding the ‘tipping point’ and stop yourself before you add too many pieces or things in a space. Adding more to a space doesn’t always make it better.

If you have ever wanted to know the secret to creating a simple look here it is: start subtracting stuff.

It’s a simple concept that is much easier than it looks. Start by taking out what is not needed in the space and see how the simplicity starts to shine through. Then start removing more and eventually you will get to a point where you’ve taken too much out and the room is just too bare. That is the tipping point. Once you have the bare minimum you can add a few pieces back, but keep it to a minimum. Let the pieces in the room help tie together the home’s color palette or create statements in their design.

In case you can’t imagine what simple coastal decor looks like, we’ve got a few photos for you. Check out these photos and use them for some simple inspiration.

Tuesday Tips

Kick back with the pup on this cozy coastal patioSpring is right around the corner and it’s been heating up here in Southern California! The last couple of days have been nice and hopefully it’s been the same for your area as well. Looks like a quick day of rain, but then we’re  back to the good weather!

Not sure about you, but we’re all ready to be outside in the sun. When the time comes, we want to maximize our patio with as much comfort and style as we can. That’s why we have 3 quick tips for your spring patio! Get your patio ready for the weather and sun with these tips!

1. Use Colors.

Don’t be afraid to use a little color outside! Sure the spring flowers show bring lots of color, but do the flowers match your interior’s color palette? Or do you want the outside to start a fresh, new palette for your patio space! There’s no need to shy away from colors! Let the hues jump out and shine like they’re meant to in spring!

2. Use Different Types of Materials.

The tip’s title pretty much says it all. Don’t limit yourself to only one type of material on your patio. There are a ton of natural materials that work great outdoors and even plenty of ‘indoor’ materials that work well outside in the weather. They just might need to be pulled in from time to time.

3. Use Plants & Flowers.

This one is a no brainer! Bring some lush, green plants onto the patio space and really feel surrounded by the outdoors. Like we mentioned above, the flowers are strangers to color so use them to brighten up your patio! Make them the standout decor in your patio space!

Tuesday Tips

Coastal bathroom decorated with stripesMake your bathroom your happy place. There’s no reason to be unhappy in or with your bathroom. Seriously, it’s the place where so many good things can and will happen. Mainly we’re talking bath tub love, but that’s a given. It’s easy to forget about the rest of the bathroom and only focus on the tub. Don’t worry, we’ve got your back! We’ve got 3 easy ways to update your bathroom that won’t break the bank or require your to hire a contractor or an interior designer. Read on!

1. Open it up.

Don’t hide anything everything in the bathroom by using traditional cabinets and storage in the bathroom. Leave everything out in the open! It makes it easier for you to grab things when you need them and it helps fight the mess. Stop hiding the mess and take action to prevent it!

2. Don’t forget the towels.

Towels are an easy way to decorate the bathroom and give it a quick punch of style. They can introduce colors and patterns without much work or effort. It’s a great way to try experimental colors or patterns as well. Not everyone is going to be in your bathroom, plus it’s pretty easy and inexpensive.

3. Cover the floor.

Rugs are essential! They give us something soft and warm to plant our toes on while providing another decor element. Use the rug to bring some texture into the space and mix up the feel in the bathroom.

:: How To Create A Coastal Gallery Wall ::

Tuesday Tips

Coastal galler wall with sea animal inspired artA gallery wall is a great way to display art and take full advantage of the walls in your home. There’s no need for your walls to stay bare and look plain. Creating a gallery wall is an easy way to solve that problem. If you follow these 3 steps to create your gallery wall, you’ll have your walls covered and looking good in no time!

1. Pick Out Your Art
First, and foremost, you need to pick out the art you wish to display. Pick out fun and creative pieces that make up a unique gallery wall. You can decide if your gallery wall is made up completely of art prints or if you want to incorporate other pieces of art or objects. Display pieces that reflect your style and create a gallery wall that is special to you.

2. Lay It Out
Before you start mounting your art, lay it out on the ground. Get an idea of what works and looks good before you start putting holes in your wall. Seriously, lay it out on the ground. The last thing you want to do is decide halfway through installing the art that you’ve changed your mind or you find out that certain pieces don’t fit well together. Don’t find yourself stuck covering up holes! The best part about a gallery wall layout is there’s no ‘right way’ to do it. The way it looks is entirely up to you! Get creative with the wall space and your art!

3. Put It Up
The last step after you finalize your layout on the ground (yes, we are going to stress that again) is to mount each piece of your gallery wall. This is the step that is going to take the longest and some patience. Get yourself a stud finder, a leveler, some nails and a hammer. You may also want to look into drywall screws and drywall anchors too. Gallery walls don’t always line up perfectly with studs and you should always mount things properly. Once you have the right tools and hardware, pick a piece and start mounting your gallery wall! Then step back and enjoy your new gallery wall.

A coastal kids bedroom with nautical, beach details and shiplap wallsShiplap paneling is a great way to bring texture and fun, nautical detail to your coastal home. It’s been showing up more and more in homes and offers a great look! But what is shiplap paneling? Shiplap paneling typically consists of wood boards that are fit together by halving so that each overlap onto the one below it. We included the word “typically” because it you can look into using other faux materials. This style of paneling was originally intended for outdoor use given the overlapping and the wood, but has naturally found it’s way indoors. Using shiplap paneling indoors opens up your options to more colors, materials and design styles. They can be used in many places throughout the home. Rooms like the kitchen, the living room, the bathroom, the bedroom and just about anywhere that has wall space. We’ve gathered a few examples for all of you to get a visual of what we’re talking about. Check it out!
