Take advantage of that outdoor space that’s been given to you! Whether it’s in the front or back of your home you can maximize your home and space with proper design. Do you have a deck, patio, porch, or free space in the backyard? Whatever it may be it’s time to use it. First things first you need some type of furniture. This creates a place for everyone to gather around. Next is a table of some sort. This way if you want to bring food or drinks out you can. Plus now you have something to decorate and a place for decor. Now it’s time for the rug. A nice indoor/outdoor or just outdoor rug will really define the space. It will turn your random furniture sitting outside into a real outdoor space waiting to be used. Bring on the accessories! Time to really make your outdoor space look like another room in the house. The best and obvious choice for outdoor decor – candles. They are a must have for any outdoor space. The rest is up to you. Want to bring out some fun glass jugs or coasters? Do it! Hopefully it will cool down around here and we can actually go outside and enjoy it for a change. Is it fall yet?

Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros
The bed is the most important part of your bedroom. Simply because it’s the main focus of the space and more importantly that’s where you fall asleep every night. When you’re looking for a bed, you are searching the perfect match. From the bed frame to the actual mattress it all weighs in on your decision. First things first, you need to decided what size you want your bed to be or what size it can be. At the moment you may be in your cute apartment and a cal king just won’t quite fit in the room. So you need to adjust and pick what fits in the room. Maybe your home’s master bedroom is twice the size of the rest of the home and with all that amazing space you can fit that cal king. In this case ladies, size does matter. We need a bed that’s going to fit the space perfectly. Don’t worry if your home at the moment is a temporary stop. You will get your space one day and that queen bed with fit in your new bedroom perfectly!
After you’ve decided the size of your bed you need to figure out what’s going to hold it up. Bed frame? Ropes from the ceiling? Or is it just going to lay on the floor? Many design choices and styles will be made and factored in at this stage. Do you want your decor to compliment your bed frame or do you want your bed to stand out on its own? Do you want a large bamboo bed frame? Do you want a simple, metal bed frame? Do you even want a bed frame? With so many choices out there you can literally dream up anything. We like to make the space as cohesive as possible and make sure the room flows. If we’re going with a rustic bed frame and using some old barn doors as headboards then we’re going to work the rest of the space around that. We’ll bring in some coastal, rustic pieces to bring the room together. If we have high ceilings to work with ,we’re going to want to play with some of the vertical space that’s been given to us and choose a beautiful canopy bed frame while shooting for the tropical, vacation look. The design choices are endless and up to your space, personality and style.
You’ve got your bed picked out and you’ve finally decided on your bed frame and headboard. Now what? Bedding! One more way you get to bring some fun design elements to your coastal bedroom. Colors, prints, patterns, pillows, sheets, throws, and whatever else you want to put on top of your bed! The best part about your bedding is you can use it to further the space’s cohesiveness with textures, patterns and colors. You can bring it all together and make the bedroom feel complete. Go bold with patterns and textures to give the room fun and playful vibes and draw even more attention to your bed because it is the main focus of the space. Not into bold? Go with muted colors and light fabrics to have a more relaxed and easy going feel to the space. Are you a pillow queen? Because we support that your majesty! If you love your pillows it just adds another design element you get to design your heart with. Hate ripping pillows on and putting them back every day? Then keep it simple with a just a few. Your bedding choices can really influence the space, so make sure you don’t take it lightly!
Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros
A rug can be the perfect thing for a cold morning, help tie a room together or be your cherished decor piece. We love rugs and if you do want a rug in your bedroom, because we know we do, then you have your work cut out for you! There are so many choices and decisions to make. What do you want your rug to feel like? How big do you want it? What material is it made out of? Where is it going to go? These are just a few questions that you will run into and need answers for. The beautiful thing is that you don’t need the answers right away. Some people like to start designing a space with the rug and others like to finish up the space with a rug. Either way works and you’re going to end up with a beautiful room.
The look of your rug is important, but it’s only important to you. You’re going to see it everyday. Whether it’s in the morning when you first wake up or at night when you’re going to bed. So you better like what you lay down. Actually, you better love it. No one wants to spend the money and then regret it later. With so many choices out there you’ve got a good amount of shopping ahead of you. Do you want a jute, sisal, grass, wool, silk, bamboo, or cotton rug? Or maybe some other material? This all depends on your decor and the look you’re going for. If you’re going for your beloved beach cottage look than a jute rug will enhance the room and fit perfectly in the space. If you’re going for an eclectic, coastal space you might have more luck with a silk rug. Start your search and leave no stone unturned. Let your eyes pick out your rug not your budget. Forget about the price for now because you can always grab the old savings jar and start saving your pennies. Plus if you settle for something you don’t truly want you’ll be kicking yourself later.
What purpose is your rug going to serve? Is it just for looks? Or did you lay it down for a functional reason? The beauty of a rug is it can be either of the two or both. You can lay a rug at the foot of your bed to help bring the room together and fill ’empty’ space. The rug gives the room a full feeling and doesn’t leave the room looking bare. You can always lay a larger rug underneath your bed so when you get up in the morning your feet aren’t greeted with the cold hardwood.
The size of your rug is up to you and what you’re using it for. If you want a large area rug that will just cover the entire bedroom floor you can find one to do that. The purpose of your rug also plays into finding the right rug. If you’re going to be walking on it everyday then you’re going to want a material that can take a little abuse. Wool rugs wear well and won’t leave you wishing you got something else. If your rug isn’t getting much foot traffic then you don’t need a heavy duty rug that can take the beating, like a woven rug. We know your bedroom isn’t getting the same foot traffic your kitchen or entryway is, but if you wanted to go the synthetic or outdoor rug route you can always do that too. You’re never limited to what you can or cannot lay down in your bedroom.
With some many choices on materials, styles and sizes you can go crazy trying to find the perfect rug for your bedroom. Just take your time because your rug will come to you. There is a lot to factor in when trying to pick the right one. Just remember these three things when you’re trying to find your rug. Where is it going? What’s it made out of? And most importantly, do I love it? If you go out hunting for your rug with just those three things you should have no problem finding the rug that’s meant for your bedroom. Good luck!
Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros
One element of the bedroom that we feel that gets overlooked quite often is the nightstand. Everyone focuses on the bed, bed frame and headboards and forgets about it. I don’t know about you, but my nightstand is a lifesaver and has helped out in numerous ways. We want to cover everything in the bedroom so there’s no way we were gonna leave this little guy out. We’re gonna show you a few different design elements and decor pieces that will make your nightstand complete.
Nightstands come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles. There’s no limit to what you can put next to your bed and use as your nightstand. You can go with a basic nightstand table like the Mendocino Table or you can go with a more traditional nightstand that has a drawer like the Mandalay Nightstand. Want to get a little more creative? No problem! You can try stacking vintage trunks or use an accent side table with a round top like the Somerville Side Table shown above. It’s all up to you and your style. You can really bring the space together when you find a nightstand that’s the right fit for your bedroom. Looks aren’t always everything though and functionality plays a part too. Don’t get us wrong, you’re nightstand needs to be cute and show that you have good style and taste, but if you’re going to need to a little more space or storage out of your nightstand then sometimes a simple side table won’t cut it. Think about the use and abuse your nightstand will endure while trying to find the right one. It’s out there! You’ve just gotta look!
A nightstand is incomplete without a lamp on it or extremely close to it, like a floor lamp hanging over it acing like a table lamp. They not only serve aesthetic purposes, but they bring more light into the space. What good is all that hard work put into decorating if it can’t even be seen? Exactly. Most importantly the nightstand lamp gives you light right where you want it. It allows you to get cozy and read your favorite book or browse through the latest issue or Coastal Living or Elle Decor. If you’re more of an in bed reader look at lamps that will enable you to do so and make it easier to give you accessible light at night like our Paris Desk Lamp. If you already have your nook setup in the corner of your room and enjoy reading there then the Jamie Young French Bottle Lamp will give you that perfect touch of light in your bedroom and look great on your nightstand.
Call it old fashion, but I like to have an alarm clock on my nightstand. Yes, my phone is right there and has the same functions, if not more, but something about alarm clocks make me feel at home and nostalgic. Cell phones with built in alarms weren’t always around and I’ve had them fail on me a number of times. Alarm clocks also bring in a fun design element too. You can find cute ones that have a great vintage style like the Ritz Alarm Clock or if you’re into digital ones you can go that route too. Either way we like alarm clocks on our nightstand.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t mind waking up to familiar faces smiling back at me in the morning. That’s why we love putting picture frames with loved ones on our nightstand. They also add a personal touch so your bedroom doesn’t feel like it’s in a stuffy magazine or like it’s a hotel room. The Boatwood Frame will add a touch of coastal decor without taking away from any picture you want to frame in it. It’s not the only frame we have though, you can check them all out Here.
There are so many fun accessories and things you can add to your nightstand. You can go as crazy as you want and try to fit as much as possible on your nightstand. Or you can keep it clean and simple and only keep the necessities on your nightstand. It’s all up to you. Add some shells, store your books or have fresh flowers that will make your space smell wonderful. Nightstands are not only there to look good, but they’re there to help. So take advantage of them!
Tuesday’s Tips From The Pros
Today we’re looking at some beautiful bedrooms. The bedroom is arguably one of the best rooms in the house. We love the kitchen, mostly the food, and of course our family room, but the bedroom will always be at the top. We want to inspire you today with bedrooms we like and design aspects of the bedroom we like. We’re just going to get you warmed up for next week when we show you how to redo your bedroom Tuvalu style. So hopefully you’re still in your bed and getting cozy because we wish we were!
We are envious of this space. It makes us think of driftwood or being out at sea. The tall ceilings with the rustic wood posts shaping the headboard is stunning. Not only is the headboard lined with thick wood posts, but the ceiling is too! What a great and unique idea instead of the typical crown moulding. The side table/nightstand and the wood bench in front of the bed also make great accent pieces without pushing the rustic, wood feel over the top. This is Tuvalu love.
This bedroom feels so light and airy. It’s inviting and looks relaxing. It makes you want to run and jump into the bed and forget about your worries. We also enjoy the symmetry of the room with the night stands and the lamps really bringing that aspect to the room. The rug underneath the bed leading out to the chest is a great way to add a little extra detail to the room. We like that the rug compliments the room and doesn’t stand out or clash what-so-ever. Be careful when choosing a rug that will go underneath your bed. A few things to keep in mind is the amount of space you have, your color scheme and of course quality.
We love anything that hangs, especially beds. These beds are beautiful hanging beds. From the ropes to the pillows, we love it! We like the vertical stripes on the walls as well. It gives the room an even bigger, taller feeling with the already tall feeling that the hanging ropes gave.
This room is all about the color scheme – blue and white. There’s almost too much blue and white in this bedroom, but did you notice the little touches of red in the pillows and the bedding? When you’re trying to stick to a color scheme you want to make sure you don’t go over board. It’s really easy to go over board and when you realize it, it’s usually too late. Keep your color scheme in mind when you’re putting together your bedroom, but don’t forget to bring in another color that will compliment your scheme. That’s not to say that you can’t do a color scheme without going over board. It’s possible, just harder to do.
When it comes to coastal design we all think of beach cottages filled with whites, blues and neutrals; but not all of us have that taste. This room has more pop and brings an eclectic look to the room while still infusing coastal design elements. It brings together bright prints and patterns with accessories to match. Every style is up to your interpretation and that’s how design grows and evolves. Feel free to break the rules and let your true creativity come out.

Jute rugs are the perfect rug for any summer beach cottage or coastal inspired home. We’re all about infusing and incorporating as much of the beach lifestyle as we can into our homes. An underplayed area of any space is the floor. There’s so much potential to maximize the area and you would be silly not to. We’ve noticed that more of the summer trends have been rolling in and our favorite, the Jute Rug, is coming back in full swing. The Jute Rug is a great way to cover floor space and add some coastal love into your home. They are versatile and can be used in almost any room. They can be used as a floor covering with other rugs laid on top it or they can lay solo and bring the space together.
Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros
We stumbled upon this beautiful family room while getting lost in the time sucking void known as Pintrest. Boy do we love us some Pintrest! I’m sure we’re not the only ones. We thought this would be the perfect picture to recreate Tuvalu style and show you what you can do in your home with our help. We’ll show a few things that we can offer you guys and hopefully inspire you to take on a summer project. Let’s get started!
We’re starting with our White Lily Sofa and decorating the room from here. We don’t want a big or hard to maneuver around sofa in our space. The last thing we want is to have to climb over things to move around our room. The Lily Sofa will give you that desired look and plenty of extra space to work with in your room.
We’re gonna need something on that sofa! We’ve got plenty of pillows to choose from, but we’re gonna go with our Embroidered Coastal Themed Pillows. It will bring some more of those coastal vibes into the space and leave us dreaming of the beach.
You’re gonna need somewhere to put your morning coffee or your afternoon iced tea, so we’ve picked our Havana Bench Table to meet your needs! We like wicker decor for multiple reasons, but the main reason is that it brings a coastal, rustic feel that over time only gets better. Have you ever seen outdoor wicker furniture that over time gets sun bleached? That’s what we’re talking about when we say coastal, rustic feel.
We absolutely adore those lanterns and think they are the perfect addition to the room. We like lanterns hanging, just standing on their own, big, small, tall, short, old and new. We don’t mind, we just like them way. It’s a good way to add more to a room and to utilize space that can’t be filled without making the room feel cluttered or crammed.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, we love all things from the beach. So when we saw that they added driftwood design elements we fell more in love with this room. Driftwood is the perfect accent piece for a coastal style room.
How could we ever forget about the starfish? We just can’t! Shop all things coastal and more at Tuvalu Home!
Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros
Today’s tip is a quick one about a different way to present framed pictures and art. We were looking through older magazines for inspiration because over time your tastes change. Things you weren’t into or didn’t even come close to interesting now have become just the opposite. We highly recommend you look through old design books and magazines. They are great because you can add your new ideas and styles into old ones. We found this image in an older edition of Coastal Living and fell in love with it. We love the creative and different way they set their photos up around the space instead of hanging them. It allows them to show more pieces and gives that relaxed look that every beach inspired space should have. Be different and be creative! Try new things!
Want to show us what you’ve done with your home? Send us some pictures and we’d love to post them!

Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros
Today’s post is our last post in this mini vintage series we’ve been doing the last few Tuesdays. If you missed last weeks post on Vintage Accessories go here. This time we are talking about the furniture. We love bringing in a vintage, rustic style piece into our design space. It brings character and a sense of home to every room. If everything looks brand new it makes us feel like we’re living in a museum and we don’t want that for our homes. We want our home to feel welcoming and cozy. That’s why we love bringing in vintage and rustic design elements. Now onto the furniture!
We love vintage and rustic tables. Give us the table we want and we’re in heaven. We love massive tables that allow us to sprawl out and handle anything we put on it. Sometimes you need to the space when you’re working on a design project so you can lay out your fabrics, wood samples, paint swatches, inspirational pictures and still have space for your laptop. We like big tables. We also like cute, intimate tables that create the perfect sharing environment. It’s nice to share a small table with a friend or loved one and catch up on things. We don’t want to be yelling now!
If you’re thinking about bringing vintage into your bedroom then Tuvalu supports you! You can go all out or you can just bring a few vintage elements into your bedroom. We are fans of vintage dressers. Tall or short we support it! We also like vintage bed frames. You can go with a classic iron rod bed frame or you can lean more towards the rustic side and go with a wood bed frame. Small side tables and night stands can also bring a touch of vintage into your bedroom without over powering anything.
Side consoles will really make a difference in the room you put it in. The console itself won’t only bring a vintage element, but the pieces you put on top of it, around it, and even hang above it will really pull the whole space together. Consoles are a vintage base piece that will continually let you grow and redesign your vintage space. The best part about the console is if you decide that your home needs a new look, you can still use it. Just replace the surrounding design elements.
Normally a TV above a beautiful console just ruins the entire thing. For some reason we like this. I’m not quite sure if it’s the airy, light feeling the picture has or the simplicity that the vignette displays. Whatever it is, this work!
Lastly we leave you with a few pictures that we love. We hope that this post and all these pictures have inspired you to go out and add a little vintage to your home. Let us know if you have and send us a picture. We’d love to show off your home and your design work!
