Designing for kids is always a blast! You get to decorate with all the fun and playful options that you normally don’t get to. Dust off that crazy imagination and get ready to collaborate with the most fun clients around – kids. The excitement that comes from them participating in the design of their new space is what it’s all about. Let’s take a look a few rooms to get you in the right design space and bring out your inner child!
Colors, color, colors! You have an endless color options and palettes to work with when it comes to kids’ bedrooms. No color is off limits. Not all designers want to stray too far from the overall style and feel of the home’s decor which means they won’t go too crazy with the colors. And others will let the kids pick out their favorite colors and go wild! It’s a great way to get the kids involved and creates a fun environment for them to be themselves. You don’t want them waking up in a dark, gloomy space do you? No way! So bring out the colors!
Looking to bring a little color to the kid’s bedroom, but not wanting to go all out? Then colored accents are your new best friends! Use accent colors to bring small pops of bright colors into the space without going overboard with colors. Stay true to the home’s overall theme and still have a little fun in the kid’s room. Accenting the right pieces can be tricky, you want the accented pieces to be noticed, however, you don’t want eyes to linger on them. Start with a few accented pieces and then add or subtract from there.
You can bring fun design pieces into the kid’s bedroom that both of you will like! Do you have an extra model sail boat, vintage chest or rustic dresser that needs a home? Well, there’s no reason to count out the kids’ bedrooms. They will get a kick out of having something like a model sail boat in their room and you can finally display it instead of hiding it in the garage or attic.
Speaking of model sail boats, they are the perfect addition and decor pieces for the kids’ bedrooms. Designers beware, you may want to avoid investing in antique or vintage model because they are more than likely going to be looked at as toys and not models. We all know where that leads – broken or ‘lost’.
Not into bright colors? Here’s kids’ bedroom designed with soft, neutral colors. It’s simple, calm and inviting. There’s nothing over the top about this space and there doesn’t need to be; sometimes less is more. We love a space that looks like it was put together effortlessly and this has just that look.

We obviously love everything and anything beach, coastal, nautical. So what can make that better? An American flag standing proud and tall in the space. Americans have created their own coastal style that separates us from the rest of the world. This Americana style usually has a few noticeable attributes. First, and most important, is the American flag. It’s going to be there whether it’s an actually flag, painting or in some other form. Since the flag is red, white and blue it’s not just going to blend in and that’s the point. We want it to stand out and be seen. Also some shabby, chic or rustic furnishings will be found in the space. These furnishings bring in a vintage feel which gives the space a sense of history. Keeping to the historic feel of the space the room will often be adorned with antique finds. Typically something from American history that would have been used in homes back in the day. Lastly, the red, white and blue decor that compliments the American flag and bring the room together. Obviously there are more characteristics and every designer has their own style or tastes so not even Americana coastal room is going to have all of these aspects, but you will notice at least one or two of these in the space.
We love the Americana coastal style because it’s a style that was created and shaped here at home. Plus it looks great! What do you guys think?
Tuesday’s Tips From The Pros
Why does it feel like we never have enough space? Better question, where did all this stuff come from? It constantly seems like we have more stuff then space. Besides just tossing everything, which happens to be the easiest way to create some extra space in your home, what can you do? Today’s post is about the extra storage you can bring into your home. Possibly taking advantage of some dead space, like under the stairs, or installing some new storage opportunities. Some of these ideas involve a little work. Maybe you don’t have the budget or want to do construction and that’s fine. A simple shelf here and there can make a huge different. Let’s start!
We will start in the kitchen, but this can be applied to anywhere you have drawers. Go deep! Deep drawers means more space in the drawer to put stuff in. It’s a pretty simple idea actually. For some of you this could be as easy as taking out a small drawer to create space for a larger one and some new brackets. Others it could be a whole new cabinet, which we support you 100% on. These deep drawers can feel endless and will proper organization they will feel endless.
Don’t let your stairs limit you! There are tons of storage opportunities here. You can install some built in selves or put up a few shelves on the wall. This will give you plenty of space for pictures, accessories, books, or whatever else your heart desires. Do you have a shell collection from around the world? You do!? Great! This is a perfect way to show it off without compromising your other valuable spaces.
We can’t forget about underneath the stairs. If you aren’t already using this space you should. Don’t have access to this space? Make it happen. You can use it as straight storage space or you can get creative and put a TV under there like above. The extra space is yours!
Your hallways offer a ton of storage space. Those walls are begging to be used. You can put some art on them and call it a day, that’s fine. If you want some more space though, you can put some selves on the walls or build them into the wall. Obviously this isn’t meant for every hallway. They aren’t all corridors, but if you can, it will add more storage space to your home.
Entryway shelves are great for cutting back the clutter and clearing up the space. Put your jacket or sweater up on the hook and toss your purse onto the shelf – nice, simple and easy. We like easy, especially with the little ones. All you need is a wall and you’re good to go.
Last, but definitely not least, the family/living room. This is where we are most of the time so why not have the storage and space we want or need? Some build in shelves will help you stay organized in the busy space and make it easy for everyone to find a blanket, or book, or movie. They can each have there place and cut back on searching time. You can install open face shelves or have cabinets that close. Either way works. Can’t put in the built in’s? That’s why we have side consoles or book cases. They can be moved anywhere at anytime. Don’t forget to take advantage of your vertical space. You can go as high as you want or as high as your ceilings will let you. It just means more storage space. Good luck organizing!
Take advantage of that outdoor space that’s been given to you! Whether it’s in the front or back of your home you can maximize your home and space with proper design. Do you have a deck, patio, porch, or free space in the backyard? Whatever it may be it’s time to use it. First things first you need some type of furniture. This creates a place for everyone to gather around. Next is a table of some sort. This way if you want to bring food or drinks out you can. Plus now you have something to decorate and a place for decor. Now it’s time for the rug. A nice indoor/outdoor or just outdoor rug will really define the space. It will turn your random furniture sitting outside into a real outdoor space waiting to be used. Bring on the accessories! Time to really make your outdoor space look like another room in the house. The best and obvious choice for outdoor decor – candles. They are a must have for any outdoor space. The rest is up to you. Want to bring out some fun glass jugs or coasters? Do it! Hopefully it will cool down around here and we can actually go outside and enjoy it for a change. Is it fall yet?

Tuesday’s Tip From The Pros
The bed is the most important part of your bedroom. Simply because it’s the main focus of the space and more importantly that’s where you fall asleep every night. When you’re looking for a bed, you are searching the perfect match. From the bed frame to the actual mattress it all weighs in on your decision. First things first, you need to decided what size you want your bed to be or what size it can be. At the moment you may be in your cute apartment and a cal king just won’t quite fit in the room. So you need to adjust and pick what fits in the room. Maybe your home’s master bedroom is twice the size of the rest of the home and with all that amazing space you can fit that cal king. In this case ladies, size does matter. We need a bed that’s going to fit the space perfectly. Don’t worry if your home at the moment is a temporary stop. You will get your space one day and that queen bed with fit in your new bedroom perfectly!
After you’ve decided the size of your bed you need to figure out what’s going to hold it up. Bed frame? Ropes from the ceiling? Or is it just going to lay on the floor? Many design choices and styles will be made and factored in at this stage. Do you want your decor to compliment your bed frame or do you want your bed to stand out on its own? Do you want a large bamboo bed frame? Do you want a simple, metal bed frame? Do you even want a bed frame? With so many choices out there you can literally dream up anything. We like to make the space as cohesive as possible and make sure the room flows. If we’re going with a rustic bed frame and using some old barn doors as headboards then we’re going to work the rest of the space around that. We’ll bring in some coastal, rustic pieces to bring the room together. If we have high ceilings to work with ,we’re going to want to play with some of the vertical space that’s been given to us and choose a beautiful canopy bed frame while shooting for the tropical, vacation look. The design choices are endless and up to your space, personality and style.
You’ve got your bed picked out and you’ve finally decided on your bed frame and headboard. Now what? Bedding! One more way you get to bring some fun design elements to your coastal bedroom. Colors, prints, patterns, pillows, sheets, throws, and whatever else you want to put on top of your bed! The best part about your bedding is you can use it to further the space’s cohesiveness with textures, patterns and colors. You can bring it all together and make the bedroom feel complete. Go bold with patterns and textures to give the room fun and playful vibes and draw even more attention to your bed because it is the main focus of the space. Not into bold? Go with muted colors and light fabrics to have a more relaxed and easy going feel to the space. Are you a pillow queen? Because we support that your majesty! If you love your pillows it just adds another design element you get to design your heart with. Hate ripping pillows on and putting them back every day? Then keep it simple with a just a few. Your bedding choices can really influence the space, so make sure you don’t take it lightly!
