Coastal kitchen with boho chic style and open shelvesWe’ve been seeing a lot open shelf and open storage kitchens lately that we love! It’s another fun way to bring style and character to your coastal kitchen. It’s a pretty simple idea; stop hiding everything and show it off!

Let people see all of your plates, cups, spices, utensils, cooking supplies, pots, pans and small appliances. We love it because it opens the kitchen right up. It gets rid of the closed off look and invites everyone right in. When people display their spices and baking essentials in mason jars or other glass jars it gives the kitchen a cute, homey look. Plus when they’re out, they’re begging to be used and make you want to cook and bake!

With everything out for your family and guests to see there will be no more wondering where the mugs or a spatchula are. Also when you have no where to hide your dishes it will finally give you a good reason to go get that cute set you’ve been eyeing for awhile now! Stop hiding and open up your kitchen! Blue and indigo hues in a coastal cottage living roomIndigo is a classic coastal home color. The rich, dark blue is the perfect compliment to the white palettes often used in coastal decor. It’s a bold and striking color that just feels so good to look at. The color is also very versatile. We often see indigo dyed pillows and accessories used in coastal design. These offer another treat to the eyes as they are interesting to look at and can show the range of indigo hues.

The color can also be used a solid color without the dye effect. It still offers that rich color that fills a space with ease. This staple color in coastal design is a great hue to add to your home’s palette if you’re wanting a classic coastal look.

Tuesday Tips

Coastal cottage living room Every home has unique features that challenge and force us to get creative with our design. One of the biggest challenges can be natural light. It’s something that every home owner wants, but doesn’t always get. What if you don’t have the luxury of endless natural light? Are you suppose to knock down walls or start cutting holes to make windows? Okay, we know that’s dramatic, but what are you really suppose to do? Natural light is a great design element to emphasize, but for some homes it’s just not an option. For those finding themselves on the lower natural light end of the spectrum, there is hope! We have three ways to decorate darker spaces that don’t require demolition.

First, design and decorate with lighter colors. Using a lighter color palette will instantly make a room feel brighter. It’s a known fact that white reflects light and black absorbs it. If you decorate towards the whiter, lighter side of the color spectrum you will find yourself with more light in the space.

Second, add mirrors to the space to help reflect light. You’re at least going to have a window or two that will splash some light into your home and you need to take advantage of that! Use a mirror to not only open up the space, but to help add extra light.

Third, layer your lights to create a well lit and balanced space. Layering your lights consists of using ambient, task and accent lighting together in order to maximize the light. Each light source works with one another to help make a full, well lit home.

Coastal bookshelf featuring blue and green huesTake advantage of your bookshelf! Use it as a creative way to not only display coastal accessories, but books as well. It’s nothing new that books can be used as decor. A well placed coffee table book can lend a great decorative hand to a coastal living room. That doesn’t mean a well thought out and designed bookshelf can’t do the same. The days of boring books on your bookshelf are over! There’s no reason you shouldn’t take advantage of that prime design space. Bring style with the books by placing them vertical or laying them horizontal to mix up the look on the shelf. Lean books to give your bookshelf a break from the routine too. You can even plan out your bookshelf and take it a step further by creating a color scheme throughout the shelf (pictured below).

Have fun and be creative with the space you have in your coastal home. If you look at your bookshelf and inspiration isn’t sparking creative ideas then look at these photos.
